Saying ‘No’ to needless gifts during wedding, Navi Mumbai couple says ‘Paytm Karo’

Gone are the days of 'Shaguns', let's do it this way- PAYTM KARO!

Posts pic with printed Paytm QR code on Twitter after it was received as a gift from friends on the engagement.

New Delhi, July 13, 2018: It was a pleasant surprise for Jitendra and Poonam Gupta, a soon-to-be couple from Ghansoli, Navi Mumbai when they received a printed Paytm QR code from the groom’s colleagues. Delighted by the unique present, the groom soon took to the social media platform, Twitter, and posted his pic along with a message “My wedding Gift from my team Thoda alag Thoda hatke My Gift...PAYTM KARO (sic)” (“My wedding gift from my team. Rather unique, rather different. For my wedding gift… use Paytm”)

In India, weddings are synonymous with lavish presents and ‘shaguns’ offered to the newlyweds. However, a majority of these presents often lack relevancy for the user. On the other hand, shaguns comprise cash denominations that become hard to manage after the wedding. A to-be couple also receives multiple similar presents, such as pressure cookers, silverware, and other household items, from different people, many of which they have no need for.

Jitendra Gupta from Navi Mumbai was quick to identify this challenge and instantly mitigated it with a simple message, “Paytm Karo” since Paytm money can be used by him for various purposes. This also highlights the ongoing trend of digital gifting in India and strengthens the nation’s position as an emerging digital economy.
